3 Ways to Make a small Space feel bigger

My first home was a small 1940s-built cape-cod “starter” home. It was super cute, but super small. We had no kids, but we did have a dog, two work-from-home careers, quite a bit of music gear (my husband is a music composer), and I’ll admit it…lottttts of clothes and home decor on my end. (To be fair, my career demands it of me.) Thus, I learned some visual tricks in my time there that helped make my small home feel bigger (no renovations required). Here are three of those tips:

Go with Clear Furniture

Choosing clear furniture, made of materials such as glass or acrylic, is a great way to trick the eye into believing there’s more space. Furniture such as this clear glass coffee table in the living room of my first home serves functionality while also minimizing the visual clutter.

Choose Large-Scale Art

Instead of a lot of small pieces of art on the wall, choose one large focal piece. Simplifying your art with one big piece fills up more space and helps the room feel less crowded. To make your room feel more spacious, opt for this instead of multiple pieces and avoid one art piece that is too small.

Bring in Mirrors

It’s the oldest trick in the book. Mirrors are a GREAT way to make a space feel bigger. Hot tip: Place one directly across from a window to bounce around the light in the room. My favorite way to bring in mirrors is to choose one that is extra large and ensure it is reflecting something beautiful—whether it be a window, artwork, or a beautiful vignette in your home.

I miss that cutie-of-a-home every now and then. That small house was filled with fond memories! I hope these tips help out with visually expanding your space!
