5 Ways to Design around Wood Trim

Okay, okay…I know the title says how to design “around” wood trim, but in actuality, I feel like wood trim should be EMBRACED.

Because of the “all white” everything trend in recent years, a lot of people felt their wood trim was outdated and ugly. But trust me y’all…wood trim can look AMAZING. It does take a bit more thought and intentionality to make a space with wood trim look cohesive, but there’s nothing that gives me warm fuzzies more than some good ole’ wood trim. Here are some beautiful spaces and tips and tricks when it comes to designing and embracing your wood trim:

Keep it Light

Keep everything light and nature-centered by choosing a lighter color palette to pair with your wood trim. Here the light wood-toned, skinny-legged dining table and chairs flows seamlessly with the wood trim yet prevents things from looking too “clunky”. The sparse centerpiece allows the wood to be the element that weights down the space.

Pair it with Blue

Play off orange-toned wood with blue colors. The muted deep-blue paint color here is a perfect pairing with the wood in this space. The blue velvet couch adds another delicious layer to the texture of the room. I love the calm vibes created in this room alongside their stunning wood trim.

Wallpaper It

An easy way to make a space with wood trim more fun is to (drum roll please)…bring in some wallpaper! I love how this room embraces all things beige, but you could bring in more excitement by choosing a wallpaper that is a bolder pattern or a colorful hue. (I personally could fall asleep in this little corner of beige heaven.)

Go Bold

If you really want to turn an old sleepy wood-trimmed room into something more exciting, do it with the decor. The bold rug, furniture and colors in this space leads the eye away from the wood trim. At the same time, the trim paired with the bold and modern furniture is the perfect concoction of traditional and eclectic.

Bring the Outdoors Indoors

There’s something about the element of wood that taps into our human instinct. It’s a basic element that has served us purpose for thousands of years. Why not work with our wood trim by bringing as much of the outdoors in? It’s a bit more costly, but adding more windows to your walls or skylights in your ceilings will help your wood trim shine. Other ways to bring the outdoors indoors is going with a concrete floor or bring in some brick, which this space has done so beautifully with the fireplace.

And there’s that! Five ways to design and decorate around the wood trim in your home. Keep the bucket of paint away from the trim…I repeat, keep the bucket of paint away from the trim…and embrace the wood for the beauty that it is in your home.
