Home Hack: Center a Light Fixture

We’ve all been there—staring at the off-centered light fixture in our home, wondering to ourselves “what on earth were the builders thinking when they put that there?”

Thankfully, here is a hack when it comes to needing to center your light fixture. I had to troubleshoot this very problem when it came to my own light fixture in my dining nook area.

Here is the “before” with the pre-existing light fixture that was there when we bought the home (not a great pic but you get the idea)

Here is the “after” with a new light fixture that we installed and swagged ourselves

What you’ll need:

  • A “swaggable” light fixture on a fabric or flexible chord

  • Ceiling hooks (get one hook per light fixture “arm”)

  • A drill

  • A pencil

1) Install your light fixture and ensure there is enough length in the arms to hang to the correct height when swagged

2) Mark holes on the ceiling where you plan to drill in the ceiling hooks
*Tip: Use a ruler to measure equal distance between the hooks

3) Drill appropriate holes into the ceiling if required

4)Screw in the ceiling hooks

5) Take an arm of the light fixture and wrap it once around the hook. Repeat for all the other light fixture arms.

And that’s it! In the future when we do a full kitchen renovation we may hire an electrician to re-wire and move the ceiling light fixture, but for now, we’re happy with this. I hope this hack helps you feel more “centered” in your space!
